Jameer Nelson was a pretty terrific story this season -- a questionable point guard who truly stepped up his game and helped lead the Magic to the top of the league, and his first All-Star appearance. Of course, today's been a bad day for those with good redemption stories. Nelson came down fighting for a rebound versus the Dallas Mavericks and dislocated his shoulder Monday night.
Nelson will have an MRI tomorrow after which a formal prognosis will be provided. It's likely that he'll miss several weeks, including, sadly, his first All-Star appearance in Phoenix.During that time, the Magic may have to sign another point guard, as they're currently performing without a net, and Anthony Johnson ain't no acrobat.
For Nelson, it's a disappointing setback, but it also illustrates how much the Magic need this new Nelson, as after his departure, a game already full of struggle for the Magic quickly got out of hand. Nelson has provided the base to the Magic's championship-hopeful soup this season, and without him, they've still got a lot of spice and some tall stalks of celery, but they just won't taste the same. It's possible he can get back sooner, but looking at his swollen shoulder as he immediately rushed to the locker room, I'm not holding my breath.
It is a short term injury, though, and if the Magic can weather the storm, they'll still be sitting pretty. Hedo Turkoglu better snap out of his shooting slump, though. Or the Magic are going to find homecourt advantage a significant step away.
