Why put off till tomorrow what you can do today? The first major signing day announcement will take place about five hours before the clock turns even over to Feb. 4. Five-star cornerback Greg Reid out of Valdosta, Ga., a guy whose stock has soared in recent weeks, will pick his future school at around 7 PM ET.Love him or hate him, Reid is nothing short of greatness on the football field. He is considered the rarest of prospects, someone who has the potential to improve a college team's football fortunes from the very moment he arrives on campus. What would cause someone to hate Reid? Well, Florida Gators fans probably can give at least one answer -- Reid initially committed to Florida a year ago but, a week before he participated in the Under Armour All-American Game, Reid withdrew that verbal.
He then turned in a great week of practice prior to the Under Armour showcase, then won the game MVP award after picking off two passes. Reid almost immediately upgraded to a five-star prospect and became the top target of several schools.
"[Florida coach Urban] Meyer was pretty upset," Reid said. "He asked 'Where were all these other schools before the Under Armour game? Did they even know who Greg Reid was as a sophomore and junior like we [Florida] did?' [Meyer] spoke in a very powerful [tone]."Reid maintained that Florida was still in the game, but that view has dimmed lately with Florida State, Georgia and Alabama believed to be his final three candidates. The Seminoles looked like they had the inside track, but Reid visited Georgia last weekend -- leading to rumors that he had silently committed to the Bulldogs.
At 5'8", 168 pounds, Reid is a bit undersized, but he makes up for that with his extremely high athleticism level. He could also prove dangerous as a punt returner in college -- in the state of Georgia's annual high school all-star game, Reid took back two punts for touchdowns. He appears to be one of the rare talents that can come in and start from Day One, so whichever school hears its name called receives a huge boost on Signing Day Eve.
