The Detroit Red Wings continued their sluggish recovery from five-game losing streak Wednesday with 5-4 win over the Phoenix Coyotes. The game came two nights after an ugly win over St. Louis and was just the Wings' fourth in ten games. It was a game of role reversals relative to Monday's against the Blues. Whereas Monday it was Chris Osgood who kept his team in it and put them in a position to win in shootout, Wednesday it was Osgood's teammates who carried their goaltender to a tick up in his win column.
Osgood started the night out well, making some big saves and generally looking sharp in the first period. Unfortunately, his mental game slipped as the night went on, leading to a couple preventable goals that came as a result of his not holding the post properly. On the third period tying goal, he looked like a goaltender on the receiving end of a tic-tac-toe play, when in actuality the play setting up Joakim Lindstrom's shot was pretty pedestrian. Osgood just looked slow.
With the playoffs just a couple months away, Osgood's play is becoming a rising concern, leading to outbursts such as this. He has got to get it going.
The rest of the team was markedly improved over Monday's game, though still not up to the team's high standards. They continue to have issues in the defensive end, and fans are still waiting for their team, which in the past has taken enormous pride in its defensive prowess, to fix those issues.
Their sloppy play in their own end leads to a breakdown of their puck possession game, as their breakouts are rarely as smooth as they were last year. The team's overwhelming offensive talent has treated this like a speed bump thus far, but that won't continue in the post-season as opponents get better.
A few players stood out for Detroit Wednesdy: Marian Hossa, Valtteri Filppula, Pavel Datsyuk, and Henrik Zetterberg all had strong outings. The former two looked like they had good chemistry on the second line, while the latter two made reuniting them a strategy that may stick. Zetterberg seemed to be celebrated on his goal by the fans at Joe Louis Arena on a level second only to the cheers following Lidstrom's game winner.
The Wings have a couple days to practice and rest before facing Edmonton on Saturday and Pittsburgh on Sunday. It's a big weekend and if they improve at the same rate over the next two games as they did over the last two, they'll be firing on all cylinders to start next week.
