Anthony Johnson and Tyronn Lue are reunited, and it feels so ... blech. The Magic's panic button teleported Lue from Milwaukee in exchange for doghoused Keith Bogans.Florida Today's John Denton (linked above) intimates that the trade all but cinches that Jameer Nelson will (indeed) have season-ending surgery to repair his torn labrum; there had been (and possibly still is) a thimble of chance that Nelson would try to rehab and get back for playoffs, a la Dwyane Wade 2007.
Denton also reports that 34-year-old Johnson, who had 25 points on killer shooting on Wednesday, will continue to lead the starting five with Lue as his primary back-up. Courtney Lee and J.J. Redick combined to back A.J. up on Wednesday; as the opponent was the delightfully terrible Clippers, it's hard to surmise how they did.
Where did we last see Lue and A.J. together? That'd be the 2007-08 Sacramento Kings, although Lue never played a minute. The Kings attempted to flip Lue at the deadline, but no one would give anything up for his expiring $3 million contract. Instead, the Kings bought him out. He latched onto the Mavs and played a whopping 172 minutes in 17 games behind Jason Kidd.
Before Sacramento, Lue and A.J. starred as two-thirds of Atlanta's simply awful 2007-08 point guard core, along with then-rookie Acie Law. Suffice it to say the Hawks did not like what they saw with Lue and Johnson, swapping them, bust Shelden Williams, Lorenzen Wright and a pick for Mike Bibby. From there, Atlanta took off and eventually put the lead to the eventual champs in a seven-game first round series.
The other four positions in Orlando are in better shape than those in early 2007-08 Atlanta -- Dwight Howard's gravity instantly makes any guard look better on both ends, and the Rashard Lewis/Hedo Turkoglu partnership works wonders on pressure relief. As with every roleplayer in Orlando, A.J. and Lue just need to hit shots. Tyronn is much better than Johnson in that category; if history carries on, we'll see if Stan Van Gundy eventually swaps the pair on the depth chart.
As for the 'blech' in the first sentence: some of us held out hope the silver lining of the Nelson injury would be an impetus for teams to start blowing up the barns with some blockbuster trades. No offense to Lue and/or Bogans, but ... blech.
