Cardinals defensive tackle Darnell Dockett walked off the field at Raymond James Stadium on Sunday with two sacks of Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. But four days after Super Bowl XLIII, Dockett was credited with sacking Roethlisberger on the play shown above (which was first ruled a touchdown and then changed via instant replay to a zero-yard run), and he has now tied the Super Bowl record with three sacks in one game.
The official box score now shows Dockett with three sacks, because the league ruled that even though Roethlisberger did get across the line of scrimmage on the play in question, he didn't actually gain a yard. That would make it a zero-yard run -- except that when a quarterback drops back to pass and then runs for zero yards, it's a sack. Complicated? Perhaps, but that's the way the official stats work.
Aaron Schatz of Football Outsiders comments further:
Dockett can thank Football Outsiders for his sack record. I noticed the 0-yard scramble when I was breaking the PBP down on Sunday night, and e-mailed my NFL contact about it. Technically, there is no such thing as a 0-yard scramble -- any pass play where a quarterback tries to run and does not gain yardage is a sack. Thus, the change.Dockett and Reggie White are now tied for the most sacks in one game in Super Bowl history.
