Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis has already made it known that he plans to use his exclusive rights franchise tag on one of Nnamdi Asomugha or Shane Lechler. It's the only way he'll be able to keep either player, as both would probably be willing to bolt the dysfunctional land of Raider nation for greener pastures (and competitive football). In Lechler's case, he would probably like to leave so he can avoid getting punched in the face by defensive linemen. According to David White of the San Francisco Chronicle, Lechler, the Raiders' punter for the past nine years, was on the receiving end of a Terdell Sands punch to the face following the team's 31-10 win against division-rival Denver on November 23. How's that for celebrating a 21-point win?
White cites five unnamed sources, including a front office member and a team administrator. Apparently, Sands was not punished for the incident, while a former assistant coach is quoted as saying, "they should have cut Sands already for that. That's just ridiculous."
In case you were wondering about the tale of the tape in this matchup, Lechler, a punter, is 6'2 225 pounds, while Sands, a nose tackle, weighs in at 6'7 335 pounds.
Phil Ivey has $800,000 on Sands.
Lechler is one of the best punters in the NFL, and while I'm sure the Raiders would love to keep him, it's much easier to find a great punter than it is to find a cornerback of Asomugha's caliber, which means for the second year in a row, Asomugha should be receiving the franchise tag.
