It was all fun and games when Mike Pelfrey wore a motorcycle helmet during today's Mets workout in Port St. Lucie. But now we know there was a reason for that.Mike Pelfrey was wearing the helmet for today's workout because he crashed a golf cart on Wednesday.Tom Verducci came up with a theory that young pitchers who increase their workload by at least 30 innings from one season to the second is more of an injury risk in his third season. Pelfrey falls under that list in 2009. I highly doubt, however, that Verducci took into account the possibility of flipping over in a golf cart. How do you even draw a pie chart for that?
In trying to dodge someone teeing off, Pelfrey got his front tire stuck in a sand trap and the cart flipped over. Fortunately for Pelfrey -- and the Mets -- he popped up unscathed.
This could have ended a lot worse than it did. Athletes and carts have had a strained relationship lately, and Pelfrey should consider himself lucky, and the Mets should consider themselves lucky as well. (And no, letting John Maine drive the cart isn't a good idea either. He has his own injury problems.)
