One thing about this market being the way it is, it puts teams that would normally not be able to catch a whiff of the high-end player firmly in the mix. This has become true with
Orlando Hudson who, in most years, would be gainfully employed (not to mention filthy rich) by now. But being in a recession and all, ballplayers like Hudson are finding a whole different world out there. It's a world where the Kansas City Royals have a shot, albeit a small one, of
bringing Hudson to Missouri.
"Nothing's changed from what I said earlier," general manager Dayton Moore said. "For us to add any payroll, we'd have to take it away from somewhere else. We're at our limit." (...)
"We like our infield options," Moore said. "We feel we've already improved ourselves there. But you also always look at ways to make your team better."
Yeah, it's still a small chance. But with everyone, even the big market teams, seemingly at their limit, what else can Hudson really do except sign a short deal wherever he can and hope that our economy will turn around so he can sign a longer-term deal for 2010 and beyond. Hudson as a Royal in '09 isn't as far fetched as you think.
