In a surprising move, the Ottawa Senators have acquired defenseman Chris Campoli and center Mike Comrie from the New York Islanders in exchange for Dean McAmmond and a first-round pick (originally belonging to San Jose) in the 2009 NHL draft, according to the Islanders website. This move makes little sense for Ottawa, unless general manager Bryan Murray has another deal on the horizon. If he doesn't, well, then he's either under the delusion that his team, currently 13 points out of the final playoff spot, is primed to make a serious run in the final weeks of the season, or he's completely lost his mind and is trying to George Costanza his way out of a job.
Comrie, 28, has seven goals and 13 assists in 41 games for the Islanders this year, and is set to become an unrestricted free agent following the season.
Campoli, 24, was in his fourth season with the Islanders and is signed through the end of next season, when he will be eligible for restricted free agency. At his best, he's probably a second-pairing defenseman.
This will be Comrie's second stint with the Senators, as he was acquired during the 2006-07 season when Ottawa advanced to the Stanley Cup Final against the Anaheim Ducks.
The key to the deal is obviously the first-round pick heading to the Islanders, which makes it a pretty sweet move for a rebuilding New York team.
For the Senators? Well, at least they'll have Carrie Underwood and Hilary Duff hanging out at games the rest of the season.
UPDATE: According to Chris Botta, Campoli requested a trade from the Islanders.
