The Clash once posed the question: Should I stay or should I go now? We take a look at the big names surrounding the NHL trade deadline and whether they'll be staying in place or going to finish the season in another city.On Monday, we talked about the possibility of Tampa Bay trading forward Martin St. Louis. On Tuesday, another Lightning player is the topic as we turn our attention to 41-year-old winger Mark Recchi. He's hardly the player he once was, and has played for four different teams over the previous four years.
Coming out of the lockout, he made a return to Pittsburgh (he was originally a fourth-round draft pick by the Penguins and won a Stanley Cup with the team) and put up 57 points in 63 games for a disappointing Penguins team that was somewhat similar to this year's Tampa Bay team -- a lot of free agent signings, preseason hype, and a highly-touted No. 1 overall pick.
With the team out of playoff contention at the deadline, Craig Patrick, in one of his final moves as general manager of the Penguins, sent him to the Carolina Hurricanes for Krys Kolanos, Niklas Nordgren and a second-round pick. He registered 16 points in 25 playoff games as Carolina won its first ever Stanley Cup.
The following season he signed once again in Pittsburgh for a third stay with the flightless birds, and after a year-and-a-half he was eventually claimed off waivers by the Atlanta Thrashers. He signed with Tampa Bay this past offseason.
Contract Status: Unrestricted free agent following this season
Teams that might be interested: Dallas, Florida, Carolina
Where he'll end up: At 41, he's a shell of his former self, but is still somewhat productive and a grizzled veteran who might be able to lend a helping hand to a young playoff team for a relatively cheap price. While players such as St. Louis (assuming they'll even listen to offers for him) will likely cost a small fortune in terms of assets, Recchi could probably be had for a pick, or, at most, a marginal prospect. He might fit in for a stretch run with a team like Columbus.
