In retirement Vlade Divac has stayed active in sport. The old Kings star served as a scout for the Lakers, ran a Spanish club and will now train his sights on building Serbia's Olympic hopes in 2012 and beyond. On Tuesday, Divac was elected president of the Serbian Olympic Committee.Divac's quick ascension met with some internal strife, as nuts as that sounds to us on the outside. Divac is promising to upset the metaphorical apple cart; Serbia's effort in Beijing were panned as disorganized and feeble. Divac's priorities are focused on building some institutional strength to get Serbia on the right track.
Obviously, basketball will be central to Serbia's hopes going forward. For all the amazing talent the nation boasts, Serbia has been awful of late in international competition -- 11th in Athens 2004, 11th in the 2006 FIBA Worlds and a truly awful 14th at the 2007 FIBA Europe.
The mire has served to send some key players on vacation instead of summer competition; only two NBA players (Darko Milicic and Marko Jaric) played on the 2007 squad -- no Vladimir Radmanovic, Nenad Krstic, Sasha Pavlovic or Peja Stojakovic. (Peja hasn't played since 2003.)
Divac is a legend to these players, and a friend to most. If he asks them to play in FIBA Europe 2009, they will play. Serbia actually has a light draw, and should be favored to finish far better than 14th. Whether the young talent (like Timberwolves center prospect Kosta Perovic) can help Serbia regain some national standing remains to be seen. But with Divac representing the nation's sporting interests, I'd bet on it.
