Despite the appearance that Jon Stinchcomb would be bolting for the Seahawks, who reportedly had serious interest, the seventh-year right tackle has agreed to remain in New Orleans for the next five years. While Stinchcomb is a brainy player, good character guy, and a community leader, the Saints' decision to keep him -- pending the terms of the agreement, which are currently unknown -- is puzzling.
With little in the way of cap room, backup tackle Zach Strief ready to step into the starting lineup, and solid depth everywhere on the line, it seemed the Saints were going to avoid bidding high for Stinchcomb, who as one of the better tackles on the market was primed for a big contract. The Saints even expressed interest in former Jaguars tackle Khalif Barnes, adding to the supposed inevitability of losing Stinchcomb.
Strief, a powerful run-blocker, is better suited for the Saints new initiative of improving the strong running game than Stinchcomb, an athletic tackle who's strength is getting out in space and blocking on screens and outside runs.
Continuity on the offensive line is important, and Stinchcomb has started the last 48 games for New Orleans, but was that worth eating up what will likely be a sizeable chunk of the Saints' cap space given the the talent they've got waiting in the wings? You can't really answer that until the numbers are released, but the early answer certainly leans towards "no."
