Oakland Signs Orlando Cabrera

Yet another Type A free agent has finally signed a contract with a team for 2009 after spending weeks negotiating. Dodgers fans, I'm sorry to report that it's not Manny Ramirez. He's still spending his time being insulted by the fact that the Dodgers only want to give him $25 million this year.

Instead it's shortstop Orlando Cabrera, who has finally agreed to a deal with the Oakland Athletics, signing a contract for one year and $4 million on Monday afternoon.

The $4 million is quite a paycut from the $10 million Cabrera made with the White Sox last year, but that's the free-agent market for you this season. Raul Ibanez and Edgar Renteria get $30 million and $18.5 million respectively, but Bobby Abreu and Cabrera can only get one-year deals for $5 million and $4 million, respectively.

Makes a lot of sense, doesn't it?

It's not like Cabrera had a down year with the Sox in 2008, even if he didn't mesh very well in the clubhouse. He still hit .281 with an OPS of .705 while scoring 93 runs and driving in 57. And he's still pretty crafty with the glove at shortstop.

Though the White Sox will get a sandwich-round pick and the A's second-round pick in the draft this summer, this is still a good signing for Oakland. Cabrera is a definite upgrade over Bobby Crosby and will help solidify Oakland's chances of winning the AL West.
