In an effort to upgrade their wide receiver position, the Tennessee Titans have signed free agent Nate Washington to an undisclosed contract, as reported by Adam Schefter of NFL.com. Washington spent the past four seasons as a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers, emerging as a steady No. 3 receiver in the team's offense. He caught a career-high 40 passes for 631 yards and three touchdowns in 2008.
Washington originally signed with the Steelers as an undrafted free agent out of Tiffin prior to the 2005 season. He exceeded all expectations by not only making the team, but also becoming the team's most prolific deep threat the past three seasons.
He has tremendous speed and can take advantage of mismatches in coverage, but he can be somewhat inconsistent and struggle to make routine plays (he tends to drop a few passes from time to time). If he's relied upon to be a No. 1 target he's going to be in over his head. He's a perfect No. 3 slot receiver, and could probably hold his own as a No. 2 in the right situation.
During his career, he's caught 104 passes and has averaged an impressive 16.4 yards per reception. Prior to signing with the Titans, Washington made a visit to Detroit over the weekend and left without a contract.
