A-Rod Wishes Jose Reyes Was a Yankee

During Alex Rodriguez's steroid allegation press conference a couple weeks ago, we had an informal FanHouse e-mail group discussion about the events. During that discussion one of my fellow 'Housers mentioned that he thought that A-Rod was just a socially awkward dude who's always been geared towards baseball and doesn't know how to be "normal" when he's in the public spotlight.

That seems like as good an explanation as any for why A-Rod seems so awkward. Tuesday, Peter Abraham brings us yet another example of how A-Rod doesn't get it. Apparently, he told reporters that he'd love for Jose Reyes to play for the Yankees.

That's Mets SHORTSTOP Jose Reyes. And SHORTSTOP is the same position as official Yankee Living Legend Derek Jeter. And you just KNOW Yankee fans aren't going to brush off even the vaguest implication that A-Rod and Jeter aren't getting along.

Thinking about this for a second, A-Rod can't possibly be stupid enough to start a passive-aggressive media war against Derek Jeter. He'd have to know he would lose that sort of battle in a bloodbath. Of course, accepting that at face value means that he IS stupid enough to not realize that invoking the name of any other shortstop in conjunction with the Yankees is going to be nothing but cannon fodder for a group of fans and writers eager to blame everything from the Yankees missing the playoffs last year to the recession on him.

Most likely, someone brought Reyes up and Rodriguez said he'd like to have him without thinking of the implications or understanding why people would get upset over it. It was probably a harmless remark, but it's crazy that he didn't see why people might take offense to it. The media treatment of A-Rod has been incredibly unfair for years now, but he doesn't do himself any favors when he opens his mouth without thinking first.
