Nomar Garciaparra isn't ready to hang up the spikes just yet. Multiple reports on Tuesday indicate that he'll sign a one-year contract with the Oakland A's, pending a physical, and join the team as a jack of all trades off the bench. Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that the deal will be announced on Friday. Garciaparra battled injuries with the Dodgers last season and appeared in just 55 games for the NL West champions. He'd been contemplating retirement after hitting .264 with eight home runs and 28 RBI on the season, one year after he slumped to his worst big league season.
Those stats aren't what made him appealing to the A's, though. It's his .339 average and 1.067 OPS against lefty pitching. With Jason Giambi, Eric Chavez and Jack Cust set at first, third and DH, the A's lineup leans further to the left than the San Francisco City Council. Having a strong right-handed bat off the bench available to slot in against tough southpaws was a big need for the A's and Garciaparra, if healthy, should fill that need.
The A's, who also added Orlando Cabrera this week, continue to shape up as one of the most interesting teams in the American League. They're solid across the board, and have a deep trough of minor league talent that could step in to fill any cracks that develop over the course of the season.
