With the Capitals mired in a two-game slump following a 5-2 thumping at the hands of the Carolina Hurricanes Tuesday night, the news didn't get any better for the Southeast Division leaders in their practice Wednesday morning.

According to the Washington Post, the NHL's leading goal-getter, Alexander Ovechkin, was hit in the foot by a slap shot and smashed a couple of sticks in frustration on his way to get medical attention.

Ovechkin, who has 46 goals so far this season, already missed a pair of games earlier this year due to visit his ailing grandfather in Russia. He also took a shot off his left foot two weeks ago in a game against Montreal, and despite it being swollen, he didn't miss any games.

The shot in practice was off his right foot, and Tarik El-Bashir of the Post set the scene:

A team spokesman just told reporters that the injury is not believed to be serious. But judging from Ovechkin's reaction -- he smashed a stick or two on the way to the dressing room -- this bears still watching.

The Caps' next game is tomorrow night against Toronto.
