Joe McKnight Is Allergic to Spring Ball

Joe McKnight will miss spring football for the second time in as many years, but this time at least its not his fault. USC is holding its mercury-like tailback out of spring ball as he recovers from the painful-sounding dislocation of four toes on his left foot suffered early in the Rose Bowl.

He's a veteran who should be ready for fall and spring ball is a bit of a joke for established players like himself anyway, but its an odd second absence. Last spring, USC simply had no choice but to hold McKnight out of spring practices after he became academically ineligible. McKnight had dropped a class necessary to stay up and up, leading to one of Pete Carroll's classic "teachable moments".

The Los Angeles Times captured Carroll's frustration at the time. "I'm disappointed, but it was coming and he didn't take care of business in one particular class that got him," ... asked if he would use McKnight as an example, Carroll said, "it's about as obvious an example as you can get."

If this had been our fathers' fathers time there would have been some yelling and physical punishment, but halfhearted public scoldings are about as far as anyone can go nowadays, mercifully so. Thus, Pete Carroll saying something about being 'jacked' and 'competing' and good friend Will Ferrell dropping 'if you're not first, you're last' -- shake and bake!

Er, maybe not. We honestly don't know, but the mind wonders.
