In the five stages of grief, the final phase is acceptance. While it is not clear whether the Wildcat fanbase is at that stage yet, the Kentucky athletic department is. They have told the NIT that they would accept a bid."We're still planning on making the NCAA tournament but if we don't, we told them on Friday we would play," athletic director Mitch Barnhart said.Okay, maybe not full acceptance, but they are getting there. Kentucky has not missed the NCAA Tournament since 1991. Only Arizona and Kansas have longer current streaks.
"We certainly don't want to be perceived as arrogant, but we also don't want to lower the standards of what is expected at Kentucky," Barnhart said.
What a relief that they do not want to be perceived as arrogant. The only way Kentucky is heading to the NCAA Tournament would be by winning the SEC Tournament.
As it stands, the Wildcats will not even be able to host the first-round NIT game in their own arena. Rupp Arena is booked to host the Commonwealth's high school playoffs. The Wildcats would have to play in Memorial Coliseum, which only holds around 11,000. That's less than half of capacity at Rupp Arena
