Wednesday night, Bernie Williams played for the Puerto Rican team in the World Baseball Classic. Puerto Rico defeated the Netherlands 5-0. Maybe he was depressed about his having left four men on base in only two at-bats, or maybe he was celebrating the victory. Either way, Williams was out at 2:30 in the morning at a nightclub in San Juan following the game.Allegedly, a woman tried to take his picture and he became angry, breaking her camera and hitting her in the face. This woman has filed a complaint.
Now is not the time to start drawing conclusions. On one hand, it's obviously possible that a man who always seemed like a nice guy in the public eye is capable of these actions. We don't know him personally. Plus, what if he was drinking and in a foul mood?
On the other hand, he probably still has a lot of money. It's very possible someone tried to start something with him in hopes of landing a huge payday.
For now, the Puerto Rican authorities are investigating, so it's best to hold judgment.
UPDATE: Our own Ed Price has acquired a statement from Steve Fortunato -- Williams' agent:
"Yesterday evening we learned of the filing of a complaint against Mr. Bernie Williams. The news has taken us all by surprise. On the night in question, Mr. Williams had gone out after accepting an invitation to be a guest performer with a local music act. Mr. Williams denies any wrongdoing and we feel that some published media reports today are inaccurate. At this time, Mr. Williams has been advised by his legal counsel, José M. Marxuach, to not make any further comments, inasmuch as we do not want to interfere with the ongoing investigation. We want to assure everyone that Mr. Williams will fully cooperate with the local authorities to have this matter clarified as soon as possible."
