Ravens, Samari Rolle to Part Ways

Samari Rolle has been beating this drum for a few weeks now, and it finally sounds like he'll get his wish: the Ravens will release him on Monday, according to the Baltimore Sun.

"I anticipate it happening. I'm happy," Rolle told The Sun. "Everyone got what they wanted out of this. I wish the Ravens nothing but the best of luck."

The move will create $4.1 million in cap space for the Ravens, a team with plenty of defensive holes to fill; Chris McAlister, Bart Scott, and Jim Leonhard -- all starters at various points during the 2008 season -- are gone, and the team is especially thin in the secondary.

Fabian Washington will join newly signed Domonique Foxworth as the starting cornerbacks in '09, but there's not much depth behind them. Which is why the club might target the position early in the draft -- assuming, of course, they suspend their never-ending search for a legit pass-catching threat this time around.

As for Rolle, there's a chance he ends up with the Jets. Not because New York needs a starting cornerback -- they already have two: Darrelle Revis and Lito Sheppard -- but because anytime a former Ravens defender hits free agency, we all just assume he's headed to New York to wreak havoc in Rex Ryan's special brand of defensive terrorism.

Baltimore will serve Rolle his walking papers because he refused to take a pay cut, but there's no way he gets a raise with the Jets if he's no better than a nickel back. And that might be reason enough to look for a starting gig elsewhere, even if it means signing with a team with no real shot at the playoffs.

And don't misunderstand: I'm not begrudging the guy for wanting to get paid, just making the point that it's not clear he'll make more money in '09 -- wherever he lands -- than he would have in Baltimore after agreeing to re-work his current contract.
