World Football Challenge Coming to a City Near You
The matches will be held in five states -- California, Texas, Massachusetts, Maryland and Georgia -- with all six matches televised on ESPN, which apparently doesn't mind televising games with little, if anything, at stake.
The locations of the matches themselves are slightly interesting, since Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass., is the only site that is home to an MLS team, meaning the league can't piggy-back doubleheaders for the series. Foxborough does get, perhaps, the best match of the six with AC Milan and Inter meeting outside the San Siro.
Also, AC Milan's July 22 match with Club America will be played inside the Georgia Dome. Those still holding out hope for an MLS franchise in Atlanta better hope that match sells out.
There's not a ton to say about this announcement, since European teams have summered in American more-and-more in recent times. There was even that whole Champions World Tour a couple summers ago, which was a lot more complex with more teams than the World Football Challenge.
Chelsea, as usual, continues to try to sell it's brand in the States and will play the Seattle Sounders in a friendly at Qwest Field. AC Milan will play the Galaxy before the Challenge begins, as part of the David Beckham loan arrangement.
