Bartolo ColonGLENDALE, Ariz. -- While many teams look at young pitchers racing toward the future at the back of their rotation, the White Sox are looking to an old guy trying to revive the past.

On Wednesday, Bartolo Colon did just that, making like it was 2005 all over again.

The 35-year-old Colon blanked the A's over 4 1/3 innings. A scout who covers the White Sox told FanHouse Colon was throwing "88-91, best velo this spring. Had great feel for the change. Kept the ball out of the middle of the plate."

A's second baseman Mark Ellis said it's not the same Colon who was dominant for the Indians and Angels a few years ago, but the new version is still pretty good.

"He's definitely able to get guys out," Ellis said. "He's solid. He knows how to pitch."

Catcher A.J. Pierzynski was also suitably impressed after his first time catching Colon in a game this spring: "He was pinpointing the fastball, a good slider, a good changeup. He showed glimpses of what he can do when he's right."

Finally, manager Ozzie Guillen: "I'm excited." Guillen said he's not so excited that he's ready to put Colon in the No. 5 spot yet: "I want to wait and be sure. I don't want to dream."

But we can dream.

Yes, there is a long way between getting 13 outs against an A's lineup that was without Matt Holliday, Jason Giambi and Eric Chavez and being a reliable major league starting pitcher again. That said, Colon showed that there is still something left in that sizable tank of his.
