Columbus Blue Jackets goalie Steve Mason stopped all 33 shots he faced on Thursday night to record his league-leading 10th shutout of the season. It's an impressive feat for a 20-year-old rookie, no doubt. When you consider he did it while allegedly being threatened by an over-the-top Calgary Flames fan (pictured right), well, that just makes it even more impressive.
According to the Calgary Herald and Columbus Dispatch, 52-year-old Peter Stenzel, a resident of Dublin, Ohio, and a Flames fan, placed a number of threatening phone calls to Nationwide Arena and allegedly threatened to "shoot" and "bomb" Mason during the game.
According to Blue Jackets beat writer Aaron Portzline, Stenzel was tracked down after authorities used a caller ID to trace his phone number. From Portzline:
"They got his number from caller ID, and it was given to special duty officers," Columbus police Sgt. Rich Weiner said. "When they got to his resident, he was upset. He's a passionate hockey fan."When the police arrived at Stenzel's residence, he was reportedly decked out in his Calgary Flames gear.
The phone calls were placed between 7:45 p.m. and 8:11 p.m., roughly the end of the first period and the start of the second. The calls set off a hectic response behind the scenes in Nationwide, with special duty officers placed around all of the arenas entrances.
"One phone call might not be taken seriously, it might not generate much of a response," Weiner said. "But when you make two or three calls and is threatening bodily harm, we're going to take it very seriously."
