PHOENIX -- Although the Athletics have said for a while that they expected Eric Chavez to be ready to be in the lineup on opening day, on Monday morning Chavez himself said it."Without jinxing myself, definitely," Chavez told FanHouse when asked if he'd be ready for the April 6 opener against the Angels.
That's not a minor admission from Chavez, who normally refuses to look beyond his next at-bat or ground ball.
Don't count on Chavez to play every day, at least not at the beginning. The A's have planned to use Nomar Garciaparra and Bobby Crosby to play third, and they will probably play at least two or three games a week in place of Chavez in the early going.
The other question is how productive Chavez will be. The past two years he's been hurt, so you can just about wipe out those numbers. When he was healthy, he always hit 30 homers a year. I doubt he'll get to those numbers this year, even if he is healthy, but he should be good for 20 if his back doesn't go out.
