It's inevitable. Injuries are going to take a toll on Major League rosters as players get ready for the grind of a long regular season. It's not terribly relevant whether the injury was Spring Training related or the effects of World Baseball Classic games. All you need to know is that most teams are headed into play next week without a few of their key stars.
The Los Angeles Angels have three of their starting pitchers (Escobar, Lackey and Santana) on the disabled list. Cardinals third baseman Troy Glaus suffered a setback and Yankees Alex Rodriguez, while apparently ahead of schedule in returning from Labrum surgery, will be out for a good portion of the early months of baseball. But, those are old news stories.
Let's take a look at the players who have been placed on the disabled list just this week.
Joe Mauer, Twins - Mauer is recovering from lower back inflammation and was placed on the 15-day disabled list today. He'll be gone until late April. Place him on your team's disabled list and grab a fill in for a few weeks. If your league doesn't use a DL you're going to have to bench him and wait it out.
Scott Baker, Twins - Baker also hit the disabled list today as he's suffering from shoulder stiffness. He'll miss his first two starts and should be benched instead of cut from your fantasy teams unless you can shoot him over to your disabled list.
Jeremy Bonderman, Tigers - Bonderman is out until the middle of April with tightness in his shoulder. You can cut him and find a better option as a fifth starting pitcher on your fantasy roster.
Trevor Hoffman, Brewers - The new closer in Milwaukee hit the disabled list on Monday (retroactive to March 27th) and is eligible to come back to the team on April 11th. He has a strained oblique and even though he's an aging injury risk from this point forward, you can't cut him as he is Milwaukee's closer. Slap him on the DL and sign Carlos VIllanueva as a fill in.
Rich Hill, Orioles - Hill was placed on the disabled list on March 29th and will report to extended minor league camp today. If he was drafted on a fantasy roster (shame on you) he should be cut immediately and replaced by any breathing starting pitcher with a job. It would definitely be an upgrade.
Joel Zumaya, Tigers - Zumaya's shoulder and neck ailments will keep him out until late April. Fernando Rodney leap-frogged Brandon Lyon to earn the closer duties until Zumaya returns. Fantasy owners should DL Zumaya and sign Rodney. That's easy enough.
Dontrelle Willis, Tigers - I spoke with a few fantasy owners who took an early shot at drafting Willis due to his past success. Bad move! Willis was placed on the disabled list on March 29th for an anxiety disorder and shouldn't be owned in any fantasy format.
