The Hobey Baker Memorial Award has been handed out every year since 1981. The award committee has whittled a list of ten finalists down to three for nine years now. That threesome, known as the Hobey Hat Trick, will be invited to the award ceremony in Washington, D.C., on April 10.

For the first time in the nine-year history of the Hobey Hat Trick format, all three finalists come from the same conference. Hockey East, which placed two teams in the Frozen Four, has all three finalists for college hockey's version of the Heisman Trophy.

Teammates from top-ranked Boston University top the list, and one of them is likely to win the award. Sophomore forward Colin Wilson (NHL rights: Nashville) was not only a star for BU this season, but also a key member of the U.S. World Junior team. Wilson leads the team with 52 points in 41 games played.

Joining Wilson is senior defenseman Matt Gilroy (undrafted). He's a great story, as he went from being unnoticed as a teenager (walked on at Boston University) to likely being the best defenseman in the country this season. Gilroy was first-team All-Hockey East three times, and was named College Hockey News Player of the Year this season. When the Frozen Four ends for Boston University, expect Gilroy to sign an NHL free agent contract, and don't be surprised at all if he is playing in the league next season.

The third finalist is Northeastern junior goalie Brad Thiessen (undrafted). He was a big part of NU's success this season, performing consistently in goal as the Huskies completed a four-year turnaround from a four-win season to making the NCAA Tournament. He posted a .931 save percentage and a 2.11 goals against this season for Northeastern.

The last time a Hockey East player won the award was in 2000, when Boston College's Mike Mottau (now with the New Jersey Devils) won. In case you're wondering about a possible correlation between the Hobey winner and a national championship, 2002 was the last time the Hobey Baker Award winner played for the team that won the national championship.
