Rockies, Rays Could Make Deal Soon

Trade talks between the Tampa Bay Rays, one of the rare teams with surplus pitching, and the Colorado Rockies have resumed, with an official with one of the teams telling FanHouse, "Something may happen this weekend."

The Rockies are in need of pitching. The Rays have not publicly decided between Jason Hammel and Jeff Niemann as their fifth starter, and the Rockies were known to have interest in Hammel last week.

Both Niemann and Hammel are out of minor league options, so neither pitcher can be sent down without exposing him to waivers. Since it seems unlikely for either to get through unclaimed, trading one would at least get the Rays something in return.

Tampa Bay had been looking at Colorado prospects from Double-A down. The Rockies' current rotation includes Aaron Cook, Ubaldo Jimenez, Franklin Morales, Jason Marquis and Jorge De La Rosa.

Hammel, 26, is 7-15 with a 5.90 ERA in 73 big-league games, 28 of them starts.
