Phoenix faces a do or die situation in Dallas this afternoon (3:30 PM ET, ABC). Here are three things to watch for.Can Shaq dominate the paint? Erick Dampier is known as one of the league's least consistent pivots, but he's a fine rebounder and defender. Shaquille O'Neal, however, doesn't exactly let himself get dominated. With everything on the line for Phoenix, we expect Shaq to assert his power around the rim, forcing Dallas to foul, double and play from their heels instead of their toes. The Suns need that.
Will anyone provide Dirk Resistance? Grant Hill has been a fine individual defender for Phoenix this season. Unfortunately, Dirk Nowitzki dwarfs Hill in length and should be able to shoot over him any time he wants. This is a problem for the entire league -- not just Phoenix. There's the argument that Phoenix could simply allow Dirk to "get his" and limit the guardable Mavericks, a fine idea. But Dirk, playing against old buddy Steve Nash, on T.V., with high stakes ... you don't exactly want to concede 50, do you?
How tight will the Suns offense be? Phoenix's offense soared against Sacramento on Friday ... but that was Sacramento. Despite what you've heard, the Suns offense hasn't been infalliable since the ascension of Alvin Gentry. Nash still registers too many turnovers (and probably too many shots). Matt Barnes is as likely to miss double-digit shots as he is to score double-digit points. The frenetic attitude means one well-played double-team on Shaq can cause the Suns to abandon the post. Jason Richardson hasn't been as prolific as you'd guess, and Leandro Barbosa is just coming back from injury. Robin Lopez and Goran Dragic ... err, yeah. This isn't exactly Nash-Diaw-Amar'e out there.
