Twins third baseman Joe Crede will be returning to the South Side of Chicago this weekend to take on his former teammates with the White Sox. Crede was somewhat of a cult figure in Chicago for years thanks to his brilliant defense and knack for coming up with big hits late in games, not to mention his run through the playoffs in 2005 that helped lead the White Sox to a World Series championship. Now just because Crede left Chicago for the Twins, the White Sox's biggest rival, that doesn't mean his old team holds any ill will towards their former teammate. In fact, most players on the team still love him but that doesn't mean they don't have some fun in store for him while he's in Chicago.
''You're going to hear a lot of crazy stuff [coming from the dugout], I guarantee that,'' manager Ozzie Guillen said with a laugh Thursday. ''That's part of the game.''Ah, yes, they will question his sexuality. It's become apparent that Ozzie has failed to spread the message of those sensitivity classes he was forced to take a few years ago.
The head games won't stop with comments from his former teammates, either. Rumor is the Sox have some stadium music planned for Crede's at-bats to try to make him crack a smile. Think anything by George Michael or the Village People.
Too bad the Sox can't even get their homophobia right. If you're going to imply Crede enjoys the company of men, wouldn't it make more sense, given his injury history, to just show scenes from Brokeback Mountain every time he comes to the plate?
