The Perfect Draft: Seattle Seahawks

With the draft approaching, we ignore projections and identify the dream scenario for each team in a series we call The Perfect Draft.

For all the good that Mike Holmgren did in Seattle (and everywhere else he coached), it's hard to argue that the first year of the Jim Mora Era hasn't already started out better than the Holmgren Farewell ~~Trainwreck~~ Tour. The Seahawks traded Julian Peterson, but they signed T.J. Houshmandzadeh and managed to pick up Colin Cole. Sure, it's not that impressive, but it's still better than what happened to Holmgren and Co. last year.

The Ideal Pick

Well, ideally, the Seahawks would get Aaron Curry. But, ideally, the Detroit Lions could hop in a DeLorean, cruise back to the mid-1950's and talk Matt Millen's parents out of procreation. And since neither one seems like a viable option, it's hard to argue that the Seahawks would be making a poor choice with Eugene Monroe to help shore up their offensive line. That assumes, of course, that Matthew Stafford - Jason Smith - Curry go 1-2-3 as has been predicted so many times. If the Lions pass on Stafford, maybe the Seahawks land Curry, but even then, they would seem to really benefit from beginning to restore a quickly declining offensive line. And there's no better time than the present -- this draft is freaking loaded with OL talent.

Other Needs

The Seattle secondary isn't necessarily "depleted," but Mora is a defensive backfield guru, so you would expect him to address one particular area of need at cornerback. And the second round, Alphonso Smith (trade-up could be necessary), D.J. Moore (same) or Sean Smith all look like potentially viable options for Mora to start rebuilding the 'Hawks secondary in his ideal image. (Although, yeah, it seems pretty likely that he's had some input on the squad already, right?) Obviously, as mentioned above, Seattle has handled wide receiver for the immediate future with Housh's signing, and a first rounder would handle the offensive line, at least temporarily.

Now onto the giant pink elephant in the room: rumor has the Seahawks possibly taking a quarterback this draft in order to start grooming Matt Hasselbeck's replacement. Supposedly, Seattle is considering Mark Sanchez at fourth overall (!) but it seems more likely that they'll lean towards Josh Freeman, etc., in a later round. Drafting Sanchez would be a "Kevin Kolb Situation," and doesn't really seem to be Mora's best chance of starting off on the right foot with his incumbent quarterback. But certainly, it's a position the Seahawks need to address: Seneca Wallace and Charlie Frye are nice injury replacements, but the future they are not.
