With only one year left on his contract to do, uh, nothing with the New York Knicks, Isiah Thomas has opted to take the head coaching job at Florida International University. Thomas received a five-year contract, with presently undisclosed terms. He will be formally introduced Wednesday as the head coach of the FIU Panthers. Also under consideration for the FIU job was former NBA star Tim Hardaway. FIU's athletic director Pete Garcia was clearly looking to make sure whomever he hired actually got some media attention.

FIU has wasted no time putting out a press release with a very sanitized resume of Isiah Thomas' career. The school president is making no bones about part of the reason for the hire.
"We are excited to have Isiah Thomas join the FIU family," said FIU President Modesto A. Maidique. "This is bigger than basketball and bigger than athletics. Having a nationally-recognized coach like Isiah at FIU will have a positive impact on our university as a whole, helping us achieve additional national exposure."While Thomas has no experience as a coach at the college level, he has shown repeatedly since his playing career ended that he is a charismatic salesman. In college, it is as much about recruiting as it is coaching.
Recruiting is all about selling kids, their parents and entourage. Thomas, despite being a punchline to lots of jokes, can still do that. As long as he stays on the right side of recruiting restrictions, this is not a bad hire. Especially at FIU.
