Italian club Juventus was disciplined with a swift stadium ban for it's fan racial chants against Inter Milan forward Mario Balotelli over the weekend. Juventus, which is in third place in Serie A, will have to play its May 3 match against Lecce behind closed doors. Balotelli was born in Italy to Ghanian parents and has Italian citizenship. The 18-year-old has played for the country's U-21 squad and considered one of the promising talents across all of Europe.
The real shame of this incident is that there are already rumors that Balotelli will try to leave Inter after the season, with West Ham linked to him due to it's Italian manager Gianfranco Zola. If Balotelli decides to leave Inter -- which owns a 10-point lead in the table -- the line of suitors will likely stretch across Europe.
Serie A can use all the young talent it can get, so for a player like Balotelli to be pushed out because of racism, is another negative mark against the league, which in recent times has been pocked by referee scandals and fan violence. Hopefully the league's quick action against Juventus will make fans think twice before saying something stupid, but that's probably being quite naive.
