Perfect Draft: Minnesota Vikings

With the draft approaching, we ignore projections and identify the dream scenario for each team in a series we call The Perfect Draft.

Minnesota made it back to the playoffs last year, only to watch Tarvaris Jackson lay an egg in a first-round loss to the Eagles. That forced the team to finally admit that Jackson may not be the answer, so in the offseason the Vikings have gone out and added a quarterback, just like the fans wanted. But by trading for Sage Rosenfels, Minnesota is hoping to prove they are smarter than the rest of the league, as Rosenfels was not looked as a playoff-caliber quarterback by other teams. So Minnesota heads into the draft with a similar situation to last year--a Super Bowl caliber team led by a less than Super Bowl caliber quarterback.

The Ideal Pick

Michael Oher: The ideal pick for the Vikings is Matt Ryan/Joe Flacco type quarterback who can step in and start as a rookie. But picking at No. 22, there is no chance that that type of quarterback will be available, and it's likely that the only three quarterbacks that carry first-day grades will all be off the board.

But if the Vikings can't snag a quarterback, adding Oher would be a nice consolation prize. He's be expected to step in immediately at right tackle, replacing Ryan Cook, and he would also give the Vikings a long-term answer at left tackle if Bryant McKinnie's play started to slip. Oher, the subject of Michael Lewis' "The Blind Side," is considered an excellent athlete who hs been erratic during his college career. But while that may be true, he's more athletic than almost any tackle who will slide out of the top 20.

A lot of mock drafts have the Vikings taking Darrius Heyward-Bey, the speedy Maryland receiver, but Heyward-Bey would give Minnesota most of the same strengths and weaknesses of the team's No. 1 receiver Bernard Berrian.

Other Needs

The Vikings would like to pick up a wide receiver to help out, and it wouldn't hurt to pick up a cornerback who could help plan for the fact that Antoine Winfield is getting old and Jared Allen could use some help at defensive end. But the Vikings are in very good shape, with an outstanding defensive line, the best running back in the game, and a solid offensive line. Quarterback is the team's main issue, but it looks like there won't be anyone available at pick No. 22 that's better than last year's fifth-round pick John David Booty, so the Vikings will likely pass on taking a QB.

Chester Taylor is heading into the final year of his current contract, so it's time to start looking for a new Adrian Peterson's backup. Since solid running backs can be found on the second day expect to see Minnesota take one on Sunday.
