Starting Five is our wrapup of the previous day's baseball action, with a quick nod to what's ahead. You Oughta Know...
That the Giants suddenly don't look so awful. They've won five in a row, tied with the Cardinals for the second longest active winnings streak in the majors. (Yes, the Red Sox have won nine in a row, but unless you somehow missed the endless highlights on SportsCenter, you know all about their 16-11 victory over the Yankees.)
Randy Johnson failed in his bid for win No. 297, leaving down 2-0 after just 3 1/3 innings, but the Giants bullpen gave up one run the rest of the way, while the offense put together a decent performance. The Giants are 8-8, having righted themselves quickly after going winless on their first six-game trip of the year.
Despite Johnson's rough outing -- and he's been just inconsistent enough that this quest for No. 300 could take a while -- the Giants have won with pitching. Their ERA during the winning streak is 1.37, including a pair of dominant games from Tim Lincecum.
From the Trainers' Room...
The Angels are getting closer to having their pitchers back. John Lackey pitched two innings in extended spring training and Kelvim Escobar threw a bullpen session on Saturday. Ervin Santana felt good a day after throwing two simulated innings. Lackey and Santana each have one more scheduled extended spring outing next week, then they'd begin full-scale rehab assignments in the Class-A Cal League.
By the Numbers...
Albert Pujols, who passed the 1,000-RBI milestone with a grand slam, needed only 1,257 games to get a grand of RBIs. Believe it or not, that's not even best among active players. Manny Ramirez got his 1,000th RBI in his 1,194th game.
In Their Own Words...
"Our approach has been very poor. It's something we pride ourselves on. We work hard at it. There's just no excuse, whether it's lack of discipline or concentration or confidence or whatever the hell it is, we better figure it out pretty damn quick because I'm not going to sit around and watch what we've been watching here." - Indians manager Eric Wedge, after watching his team lose 7-1 to Twins. The Indians are 6-12.
Advance Scouting...
The Mariners will go for the sweep at Anaheim (3:35 PM ET) behind former Angel Jarrod Washburn, who is 3-0 with a 1.71 ERA so far for the M's. Yeah, there are no huge games in April, but this one could be fairly significant, relatively speaking. The Angels were supposed to walk away with this division, but they're digging a hole, and the Mariners are growing more confident by the day.
