SAN FRANCISCO -- The big number for Randy Johnson was not 297, but zero.

After Johnson pulled within three victories of the ultimate pitching milestone, the Giants pitcher said he was more satisfied with the quality of this win (zero runs allowed) than with the quantity of them he's amassed.

For seven innings against the Rockies on Friday night, the Big Unit was the Big Unit.

"People say 'He's 45, he's all washed up,' " Johnson said. "But I believe I can pitch like I did today. When you pick up the newspaper in the morning, you won't know if I'm 45 or 25."

(The mere fact that Johnson still picks up a newspaper indicates he's more likely to be 45 than 25, but that's another story.)

In the Giants' 3-2 victory over the Rockies at AT&T Park, Johnson gave up just four singles in seven innings. He struck out nine and he did not walk a batter. It was a far cry from the seven-walk disaster he had in his previous start, which followed a seven-inning, one-hit gem in the start before that.

"I know I can pitch like I did today, but at the age of 45 I might not be able to do it back-to-back-to-back like when I was younger," Johnson said.

Given Johnson's pattern of pitching very well every other start, he ought to get No. 300 the first week of June in Washington.

If you are planning your Big Unit 300 Win Tour, his next five starts are fairly certain, barring injuries or rainouts: May 6 at Colorado, May 11 vs. Washington, May 16 vs. the Mets, May 22 at Seattle and then May 27 vs. Atlanta. After that, it's hard to tell, because the Giants have two off days before his next turn. He'll start one of the games June 2-4 at Washington.

Although the Giants fans are certainly hoping that Johnson gets the big one in San Francisco, from a big-picture perspective, it would be pretty neat if he got No. 300 in Seattle. Seattle is, after all, where he became the Big Unit.

Johnson's not into the nostalgia just yet.

"I'm not just about getting five wins (since starting the season at 295)," Johnson said. "I want to get those five wins as soon as I possibly can and go from there."
