In 1976, the Green Bay Packers Promoted the Swine Flu Vaccine
During the last swine flu outbreak in the United States, in 1976, the government tried to convince every American to get vaccinated. And in Wisconsin, that effort included showing the above public service announcement featuring two Green Bay Packers players.
Packers defensive backs Johnnie Gray and Steve Luke engaged in this great bit of dialogue:
Luke: You know what, Johnnie? There's only one thing I can think of that hits harder than us.
Gray: What can that be?
Luke: The swine flu. It can knock you flat.
Gray: So what's the defense for it, home?
Luke: Like our philosophy. You've got to hit it before it hits you.
Gray: You mean the shot?
Luke: Yeah
Gray: You got yours?
Luke: You better believe it. If swine flu wants to challenge me, I'm ready.
Gray: Me too, brother. Me too.
Narrator: Get the swine flu shot. Time is running out.
As it turned out, the 1976 swine flu wasn't as dangerous as the side effects of the inoculation, so those who ignored Luke and Gray's medical advice were better off than those who heeded it. So, lesson learned. I don't think we're going to see a similar commercial with Charles Woodson and Al Harris this year.
