Brooks Robinson Conquered Cancer

Tuesday at a luncheon on the Baltimore area, Orioles Hall of Fame third basemen Brooks Robinson revealed that he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer. According to the 71-year-old Robinson, the cancer was detected very early and he's now in the clear.

After a whopping 39 radiation treatments, the best defensive third baseman in baseball history disposed of the cancer the way he took care of any line drive in his vicinity -- with seeming and unbelievable ease. He told his conquering tale to a group of American Cancer Society members.

"I've been very fortunate to have an incredible wife (Connie) and family to support me,'' Robinson told a group of about 40 ACS supporters, "the finances to get medical care and the good fortune to be in my adopted hometown of Baltimore, which boasts the best medical care you can get anywhere in the world. When you are diagnosed with cancer, your only focus should be on getting better. If you don't know where to go for help, you can't get it. If you don't know what questions to ask, you can't get the answers."

The inspiring Robinson played his entire 23 year career in Baltimore, where he won 16 gold gloves, hit 268 home runs, drove home 1,357 and won an MVP. He is beloved to this day by all Orioles fans.
