Put the champagne on ice, because Manchester United could have the 2008-09 Premier League crown wrapped up before most Americans are awake Saturday morning. The Red Devils put themselves on the doorstep of their third straight Premier League crown after beating Wigan Athletic 2-1 Wednesday, finally making up the 'game in hand' the club has held seemingly for months. Manchester United now lead second place Liverpool by six points with two games remaining. All Manchester United needs is one point from its two remaining games -- the first coming in the early Saturday morning fixture against rival Arsenal at Old Trafford.
For over an hour though, it appeared Liverpool might have been given a lifeline to somehow get back into the title chase. Hugo Rodallega put Wigan ahead 1-0 on a 28th minute goal, where he collected a ball inside the box off his chest in front of the defense of Nemanja Vidic, collected in on the ground after losing his balance and managed to squeeze it through the post and Edwin van der Sar.
Manchester United got on the board in the 61st minute on an incredibly cheeky goal from Carlos Tevez. Oddly enough all week rumors have been swirling that the Argentine will leave the club after the season. Sir Alex Ferguson might want to hit the typewriter and quickly cobble together a new deal, since 'Hulk Hair' seems to be able to find the net at the most oppurtune times for United.
Wednesday, he was able to deflect an off target shot by Cristiano Ronaldo and scissor kick it with his back heel all with his back turned away from goal. Not too shabby.
United took all three points when Michael Carrick settled a ball at the top of the area and lashed it with his left foot into the top left corner of the net in the 86th minute.
Liverpool needs a minor miracle now, namely for United to lose it's last two matches. Perhaps Arsene Wenger will get his Arsenal squad to meter out some revenge from last week's Champions League semifinal thumping by United. And Hull City will certainly need the three points since it's fully engaged in a relegation fight.
That, however, seems wishful thinking copped straight from one of Rafa Benitez's most lucid dreams.
