On Tuesday we noted a report that former Stanford, Notre Dame and Washington head coach Tyrone Willingham had accepted a new job as an assistant coach in the upstart United Football League. But now it appears that Willingham won't be a UFL assistant after all.
The original report came from the Seattle Times, citing the web site FootballScoop.com, but now the Times and FootballScoop.com both say Willingham was not able to reach an agreement to work for the UFL's San Francisco franchise.
Willingham moved back to the Bay Area after he was fired at Washington, and he's good friends with San Francisco's UFL coach, Dennis Green. So it wouldn't be unreasonable to think he'd take a job with the team. But apparently he's not planning to do so.
The UFL, a four-team league, is planning to start play in October. In addition to Green coaching the San Francisco franchise, the UFL has Jim Fassel, Ted Cottrell and Jim Haslett lined up as head coaches.
