Right about now fans of the Boston Bruins and Carolina Hurricanes have to be wondering which version of their teams will show up tonight. This Eastern Conference semifinal has seen both teams go through the motions and take their turns dominating the series. Four of the six games have been decided by three or more goals. Each team has won at least two in a row at some point during the series and neither has had a huge home ice advantage.
As entertaining and closely competitive as the Penguins-Capitals semifinal was, the Hurricanes and Bruins have provided us with a series that leaves most fans scratching their heads. It's really hard to get a feel for who has the advantage tonight for Game 7 in Boston.
The Bruins stormed through their first five games of the playoffs, four of them against the Montreal Canadiens. Then, almost inexplicably, the Bruins hit a wall in Game 2 against the Canes and lost three straight. Just as inexplicably, they put together back to back wins to get us to where were are now, Game 7. The main cog in their efforts has been their offense that put up three goals in Games 2 through 4 and 12 in the other three games of the series.
Contrast that to the man who has been their most consistent performer; goaltender Tim Thomas. He has been their leader in net all year -- with all due respect to Manny Fernandez's efforts -- and has excelled in this series. Thomas is averaging 27 saves per game and his only given up 12 goals in the six games. That's good enough to keep any team in any game.
On the other hand, the Canes have been fairly consistent throughout the playoffs but have certainly had struggles of their own. They fell behind 3-2 to the Devils in the first round before storming back to win two games and take the series. After going up 3-1 on the Bruins in this series they haven't shown much life in the last two games. Two opportunities to close out a series, including one on home ice, and a trip back to Boston for Game 7 must seem like a death sentence especially after getting dominated in those two games. But in the NHL anything can happen especially in Game 7.
Just ask the Washington Capitals.
