LOS ANGELES -- Dressed in you-can't-handle-the-truth black, with red-tinted shades, team mascot Jack Nicholson motioned wildly to the crowd and led cheers. The non-celebs in Staples Center were just as feverish Sunday, waving their gold foam index fingers as the Laker Girls grooved and a rock band rumbled. The "MVP!'' chants resumed for Kobe Bryant, and some early "Houston (bleeps)'' sentiments faded into a reality that the Lakers were not going to humiliate themselves, much as they'd tried during two weeks of catastrophic mood swings.
