High School Golf Team Takes Private Plane to Avoid Traffic Jam

Remember back when you were in high school, and traffic was bad when you were heading to a sporting event, so you just called up your dad and borrowed one of his buddies' private planes? Ohhh, memories.

The Brunswick School golf team, trying hard to become the most hated bunch of rich kids on the planet, did just that last week to avoid a traffic jam on Interstate-95 that would have caused the team to potentially miss the biggest tournament of the year.

"We were going to have to bag it. It would have been a bummer. I just called my dad. He has a friend who has a couple of puddle-jumper planes," said Conor Kenny, 18, the team's senior captain.

And in the amount of time it takes to play a par-5, four golfers and an assistant coach flew by charter plane Wednesday from Bridgeport's Sikorsky Memorial Airport to Fishers Island, N.Y., where the squad arrived in time for a 12-team invitational tournament that they went on to win.

"It's a 10-minute flight. Boom, got us right there," said Kenny, who shot an 80 and was the medalist from the blue tees at the Fishers Island Invitational.

When I was in high school, my golf coach once stopped on the interstate as we were heading to a tournament because he said we were making too much racket. I'm assuming Brunswick probably doesn't face those types of problems.

The fact that a team took a plane to a golf tournament and then went on to win might seem like the best part of the story, but this line had me rolling.
