The Rays' pitching staff took a pair of hits on Friday with the news that both Scott Kazmir and Troy Percival are headed to the disabled list. The Rays called up shortstop Reid Brignac and right-handed pitcher Dale Thayer to take their places on the roster. If reports are accurate, 2008 playoff hero David Price may not be far behind them. Kazmir has a strained right quadriceps, which may have been contributing to his poor performances of late. Kazmir has allowed 14 earned runs in his last two starts, which lasted less than eight innings combined, and has a 10.89 ERA in May.
His last start was on Wednesday, after which Joe Maddon affirmed that he'd remain in the rotation. His next turn in the rotation comes up on Monday, and Marc Topkin of the St. Petersburg Times is reporting that Price will be called up to start in his stead. Price threw five no-hit innings on Monday for Triple-A Durham, and Kazmir's injury may make it impossible for the Rays to keep him down on the farm much longer.
Percival is suffering from right shoulder tendinitis, and allowed two runs on two walks and a hit in a brief appearance in Thursday's victory against the A's. He's got six saves and a 6.35 ERA in 14 games this season.
Marc Lancaster of the Tampa Tribune tweeted that Percival has gone home to ponder his future, which may be in doubt due to the latest spate of arm trouble. Lancaster also reports that the Rays will close games based on matchups, but Jason Isringhausen does have a lot of experience in the role.
