Courtney Lee's Layup Doesn't Go Down

Courtney LeeLOS ANGELES -- It's an overstatement to suggest that the Orlando Magic blew Game 2 to the L.A. Lakers on Sunday night at Staples.

That wouldn't be a fair way to describe their 101-96 overtime loss.

Then again, it is accurate to say they had opportunities to win it. And there was no better opportunity to get the win than the layup Courtney Lee missed at the end of regulation off of a beautifully executed inbounds play.

"He missed it," Orlando coach Stan Van Gundy said. "I don't know what else to say. Hedo made a great pass, and we missed it. I don't really know. I'm not trying to be a pain in the butt. I just don't know what else to say about it. It was a great pass, it was right there, and he missed it."

Said Lee: "It was a good play. It was a good pass. Coach did a good job of drawing up the right play. I caught it, got a good look at the backboard. I tried to get it up there as quick as possible, and the ball rolled off the rim."

With the game tied and 0.6 seconds remaining, Lee got behind Kobe Bryant on an alley-oop. Hedo Turkoglu, who was inbounding at halfcourt, put the ball right on the money.

Lee caught it cleanly, had to adjust slightly, but failed to convert a very makeable shot that could have given the Magic a victory.

"We warned Kobe that was probably what they were going to come back to because the first time (before a timeout) he was helping on a lob opportunity to Howard," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "We suspected that that would probably be the action that they would come back to, but they still found a way to get the shot off."

Said Bryant: "Honestly, it was just a brilliant play. It was just a very, very smart play that he drew up. He knew my eye was more on the shooters coming up. Just a hell of a play by a hell of a coach."
