Bad News for Spectators -- No Refunds For Thursday US Open Tickets

Just when you thought soggy socks and a sore arm from carrying that umbrella for five hours was all the pain you'd go through at Bethpage Black, this news comes through.

According to the USGA official website, tickets will not be refunded for Thursday's round. That's right, if you traveled to Bethpage to watch action on Thursday, you will not be allowed in another day because one player had hit one shot. Hey, that's policy.

Inclement Weather Ticket Policy

  1. If play has commenced (i.e., if one player has played his first shot), it is the policy of the USGA that tickets will not be refunded or exchanged for a later date.
  2. If play has not commenced at any time during the day for which the ticket was issued, ticket holders may use their ticket from the cancelled round for admission to the 2009 U.S. Open Championship on a later date.
That's right, everyone. You might have seen Tiger play six holes, but that is all you'll see.

Could this policy be more ridiculous? People travel from all over the world to watch a U.S. Open and just because someone hit a single shot, their ticket is void? I would like to blame this on Mother Nature but the USGA is at fault and they need to change this right now.

One reader, John, who has Saturday tickets, brought this point up and provided this scenario. "The killer for us is that we're coming from Philadelphia, maybe a 3-hour train ride. We're leaving at 7AM (well before play starts) and I have nightmares of getting there and finding out the round has been called off, so not only am I out the $400 I spent on tickets, I've wasted a whole day on trains to boot."

No reason for this. None whatsoever. In golf lingo, the term for a golfer being frustrated with his game or a certain shot is called "red-assed." Right now, if I was a Thursday ticket holder, that red color might be closely resembling lava.

Update: Decision was made, and there is zero percent chance you'd be allowed in with a Thursday ticket on Friday.

From the USGA website:

5:02 p.m. - Here is the decision about the (tickets):

Thursday tickets will not be refunded or exchanged.

Play will resume Friday at 7:30 a.m., weather permitting. Only Friday tickets will be accepted.

Friday Morning Update: During the USGA's coverage online, announcers let the audience know that if you had a Thursday ticket to the U.S. Open and the tournament rolls over to Monday, you'll be allowed entrance with your Thursday ticket stub. Hey, it's better than nothing.
