Roddick Strong in First-Round Win

WIMBLEDON, England (June 23) -- Andy Roddick's quest for a Wimbledon breakthrough is off to a strong start. The sixth-seeded Roddick displayed his powerful serve, and played nearly mistake-free tennis en route to a 6-3, 7-6 (3), 4-6, 6-3 first-round victory over Jeremy Chardy of France.

Roddick committed just nine unforced errors in the match, compared to 46 winners and 20 aces. He lost just eight points on his first serve.

Roddick, the runner-up to Roger Federer in 2004 and 2005, improved to 29-8 at Wimbledon. He and Federer are in opposite halves of the bracket again this year.

"Every year is different, you're not getting wins on finals played five and six years ago," Roddick said. "But that being said, I think it just helps. Little things like going out on Centre Court, it's not going to be my first time."

Next up for Roddick is a second-round match with Russia's Igor Kunitsyn, who was actually trailing Gregor Dimitrov 6-3, 0-6, 0-4 in his opener when Dimitrov had to retire with an injury.

Chardy was the 2005 boys' champion.
