Adrian BeltreNEW YORK – When bone spurs were removed from Adrian Beltre's shoulder Tuesday, no structural damage was found, giving the Mariners hope their third baseman could return sooner than the originally projected 6-8 weeks.

"Everything went great," manager Don Wakamatsu said. "There wasn't any damage to the [rotator] cuff or anything like that. The bursa sac was inflamed.

"We're still looking 6-8 weeks, but maybe if everything goes well it might be quicker than that."

Without Beltre, Wakamatsu put journeyman Chris Woodward in the lineup at third Tuesday at Yankee Stadium. And Jose Lopez might see time at third. But Wakamatsu doesn't want to move Russell Branyan, who has a team-high 19 homers, from first base to his former position.

"Our thought as a coaching staff," Wakamatsu said, "was, this guy's having a phenomenal year, he's improving at first base. He's a guy that we'd like to have continue that over there and not play around with that right now."

Beltre had been hot, hitting .328 over his past 31 games.

Seattle's other left-side infielder, shortstop Yuniesky Betancourt, could be back from his strained left hamstring by July 9. Betancourt is scheduled to start a minor-league rehabilitation assignement July 6.

Wakamatsu said reliever Shawn Kelley (left oblique) could come off the DL this weekend. Outfielder Endy Chavez (torn right ACL) is scheduled for surgery July 9.
