Looking to cycle spot-starters each day? Check out the Stream Team, where we tab pitchers that are likely to help you in your quest for fantasy gold. Some people will look at Felipe Paulino, see an ERA of 5.51 and a WHIP of 1.54, and pass. But delve deeper into the numbers and you start to realize the poor ratios aren't indicative of Paulino's talent. After a pretty good April, Paulino came out of the pen three times in early May before the Astros gave him another start. This seemed to throw off Paulino's rhythm, as he was knocked around in three May starts before landing on the DL in early June with a groin strain.
Fast-forward to June 27th, the day the Astros activated Paulino to start against the Tigers. He threw his best outing of the season, surrendering three hits and a solo HR to Ramon Santiago while striking out nine batters and walking none. His fastball reached 97 MPH during the 96-pitch outing. It appears Paulino has put that rough May behind him and is ready to lower his ERA and WHIP significantly.
Tomorrow, he draws the Giants in San Francisco, a team that ranks 29th in the majors in OPS against righties and 28th in the majors in HRs against righties. They'll also likely be stymied by Paulino's improved stuff, as the Giants have the fifth-most strikeouts and take the third-fewest walks against righties in the majors. It also bears mentioning that AT&T Park is a great environment for pitchers, yet another plus to add to Paulino's potential for tomorrow.
So let's add Paulino to the Stream Team today. If he can bring the stuff he had against the Tigers last week, we should be able to count on seven innings pitched, two runs or less allowed, and 8-10 strikeouts, with the potential for even more. Let's be greedy and also credit him with a win in tomorrow's performance.
