Tell Brett Favre That This Door Is Closed

So Brett Favre has told the Vikings that he's not going to come out of retirement, which allows the Vikings to know who their quarterbacks are before training camp begins.

That's actually good news for the long-term health of the Vikings, but now they need to make sure that it sticks. Favre has already told the NFL Network's Steve Mariucci that he's going to continue throwing and that he can't promise that he'll feel the same way when he wakes up on Wednesday.

If that's the case, the Vikings should make things easier for him. Head coach Brad Childress should tell him it's over regardless of whether he changes his mind or not. Change your mind on Wednesday? Too bad. It's time to tell Sage Rosenfels and Tarvaris Jackson that they will compete for the starting quarterback job and there will be no other competitors.

Maybe it was a nice thing for Childress to dream on in the spring when Favre first started wavering on his retirement, but you can't leave these kind of things up in the air at the end of July. And you can't tell your team that their offensive team leader is a quarterback who can't go two days without changing his mind. Football requires total commitment, not befuddled confusion, especially from a 39-year-old quarterback who led the league in interceptions last year.

So for the Vikings' sake, Childress should let everyone know that the flirtation with Favre is over.
